Jeanene Ecob (Executive Director)

Expertise: Counsellor, PCIT Therapist, Child and Family Therapist

Jeanene has been married for 20 years and has three children – 17, 14 and 10 years old. Jeanene’s background was in finance, however, through the influence of youth work and membership of a church that is strongly committed to welfare work, moved into counselling in the early nineties.
Jeanene brings a wealth of knowledge related to children’s issues and family dynamics, and has a vision for families to become all they can be – safe, connected, healthy environments for individuals to prosper in. Jeanene joined the team at SCW in 1996 and is responsible for the management and growth of the service.
Jeanene’s training was initially youth work, she then completed a bachelor of counselling at the end of 1995. She has also done intensive mediation training and completed her Masters degree in Counselling in 2000. Jeanene has completed more than 5,000 hours of counselling specialising in relationships, child and family, trauma and grief and personality disorders.
Most recently, Jeanene completed a graduate certificate in child and adolescent mental health at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry.
Jeanene supervises, consults and speaks broadly on issues relating to parenting, marriage and family and human relationships and their impact on individual and community health.
Kerry Moss (Parent Assist Project Coordinator)

Kerry has been married for 18 years and has 2 children aged 16 and 14. After many years of work in administrative positions, Kerry began studying at University and in 2002 completed a Bachelor of Science (Psychology). She subsequently earned a Graduate Diploma in counselling from Tabor College. Kerry began working at SCW initially as a student therapist until late 2005 when she became a member of staff in the role of Parent Assist Program Coordinator. This role sees Kerry assisting low income families with PCIT, child and individual counselling and she is also involved in community parent education. The greatest benefit of the role was Kerry’s training in Rock and Water - a social strengths active learning program for boys. With vision and passion for the potential this program has for the future well being of its participants, Kerry is strongly motivated to develop the program and take it to other areas of preventative care. Kerry currently runs the Rock and Water program for boys aged 9-12 twice a year. The feedback so far is very encouraging. Kerry also continues with child and family therapy, PCIT and individual counselling.
Karlyn Johns (DSI Coordinator)
Karlyn is married to Sean and has three beautiful children. Her career in this industry commenced when she started coordinating a street outreach van called Wesley Mission Drug Arm. Her role there was to set up the service, coordinate volunteers, write the policy and procedures, and provide casework for young people. She then moved to StreetSmart in their chronically homeless youth centre to coordinate an intervention program for young people (10-16) who were leaving home early. The program provided mediation, counselling and casework. Karlyn has a heart for young people to know God’s love and to reach their fullest potential by supporting them to overcome their situation. She has completed a community welfare certificate and mediation training and is currently enrolled in a Social Science Degree. Karlyn feels blessed to be a part of the Deliberate Self Injury Program and believes her past experience has given her the confidence to face the challenge of supporting those in the community who are affected by DSI.
Susan Foyle - Business Manager
Susan joined SCW in January 2007. She has previously worked in many varied fields bringing a range of business experience to the team. Susan completed the Lifeline telephone counselling course in November 2007. She has a passion for supporting others to believe in themselves and loves to see lives in the community changed for the better. Susan enjoys organising the team at SCW and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Susan is always on the look out for any funding opportunities for SCW! She has been married for 12 years and has 2 lovely boys.
Karlie Carroll (Psychologist)

Karlie joined our team in 2000. She comes from an educational background where she taught in various high schools for 7 years. Not long after commencing teaching, Karlie recognised she had a passion for counselling adolescents while supporting parents and carers. After completing her teaching qualifications, Karlie began studying with the Anglican Counselling Centre. Since completing this Karlie has undertaken further studies at University in the area of psychology, completing a Masters in Psychology, specialising in Child and Adolescent Psychology, in 1997. Karlie became a registered psychologist in 1999. Karlie has also done further extensive training in adult psychotherapy using Transactional Analysis. She currently works with children, adolescents, families and individual adults. Karlie works part time with SCW as well as in her own private practice. She has been married to Rob for 16 years and they have 3 beautiful children.
Robert Carroll (Counsellor; Psychotherapist in training)

Rob’s background lies in the hospitality industry where he has been a chef for over 25 years. His change from a corporation focus to counselling has been a long process. In 1996 he was drawn to doing some part time study with the Anglican Counselling Centre. He found this modality of working with individuals very fitting and appreciated the holistic approach of the theory based Gestalt Therapy. In 1997 he went on to further his study with the centre and completed the accredited second unit of work. After having a five year break from study and sufficient time to integrate what he had learnt from the Anglican Counselling Centre, Rob returned to study. Building on what he previously knew, Robert began study with the Australian Centre for Integrative Studies. He has now completed four years training to become a psychotherapist skilled in Transactional Analysis. Rob currently works for SCW on a part time basis, and has been a generalist counsellor for over 6 years. Rob has a particular passion for working with men and the issues that arise for them in trying to juggle their many demands. He works primarily with men and couples in the area of communication, connection, depression, anxiety and personality disorders. Rob has been married to Karlie for 16 years and they have 3 beautiful children.
Jan Speckman (Counsellor, Life Coach)
Grad Dip Counselling: MCCA. Certified Practicing Coach of Future Achievement Australia.
Jan completed a Graduate Diploma in Counselling in 1996 with Wesley Institute and is a Graduate Member of Christian Counsellors Association of Australia. She has been working for 10 years as a counselor in the Sutherland area and has been with SCW for the last 6 years. Her areas of specialty are anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship issues and life coaching.
Jan has completed a Life Coaching certification with Future Achievement Australia. She worked on the Maximizing Potential in Macarthur project which was connected with the University of Western Sydney coaching volunteers working with high school students in the area. Her early University studies were in the field of Nursing. She became interested in counseling after doing a pastoral care course with Life Care. She has had experience working in church, para church (Campus Crusade for Christ Australia) and in the community. She enjoys being a part of bringing wholeness to relationships and individuals.
Rachel McKinnon (Intern Psychologist)

Rachel has known for a long time that her passion lies in working closely with people to support them in finding hope. As well as counselling, this passion has been outworked through her involvement in youth ministry over the past 8 years, and more recently specifically in outreach to those who are marginalised in the local community. She has worked in various church-based and welfare roles including drug & alcohol and homelessness services. Her formal training began with an undergraduate degree in psychology, and her honours year led to some further research work in the area of educational psychology. Rachel has since completed postgraduate qualifications in both education and applied psychology/social health, and is currently an intern psychologist at SCW as well as working as a local primary school chaplain. She very much enjoys her work and feels priviledged to be involved in people’s lives in this way.
Karen Kokles (Counsellor)

Karen grew up in Oregon, USA where she had a background in bookkeeping. She met and married an Australian and has 4 adult children. After 15 years being a stay at home mum, Karen began her training in counselling.
Karen graduated with a degree in counselling in late 1995 after which she completed the Personal Counselling Training course with Anglican Counselling Centre. Since then she has had further training in Emotionally Focused Therapy with the institute of EFT in Annandale and is a member of Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association of NSW.
Karen ran a private practice in Wollongong for 10 years and counselled with Padstow Community Care during that time. Karen has been with SCW for 12 months and looks forward to continuing her work with people and seeing them move forward with their lives.
Judy Wilson (Psychologist)

Judy commenced working at SCW in February, 2008 and has a passion to see people of all ages live and enjoy their lives to the fullest measure possible. Coming from a teaching background in several schools in Queensland, Judy commenced her counselling training in the late 1980’s at the Bible College of South Australia where she met her husband Peter who was training for the ministry. After completing Bible College and getting married, Judy completed her Psychology degree at the Flinders University of SA, in between supporting her husband in pastoral ministry and having 3 beautiful children. Since moving to Sydney in 2002, Judy has finally completed her graduate studies to become a registered psychologist and has worked as a Child, Youth and Family Counsellor, lectured in the Counselling stream at Tabor College, and more recently has established her own Private Practice. After nearly 20 years of counselling and being involved in pastoral ministry, Judy has extensive experience in working with people of all ages, from varying backgrounds in a range of areas: depression, anxiety and emotional disorders; grief and loss counselling; relationship counselling; stress management; childhood behavioural problems and parenting skills; and self-esteem/identity issues.
Barbara Higgins (Breakthrough Coordinator)
Barbara is an active retiree who coordinates the Breakthrough - Divorce and Recovery Workshops for SCW. Barbara’s early training was in nursing, followed by marriage and the birth of her 4 children. Barbara has been married to Barry (also a member of the Breakthrough team) for over 45 years. Through the years Barbara has been involved in many church related ministries and has become educated in these areas as the need arose, including a lay pastoral course. More and more Barbara has felt a calling towards assisting those who are hurting or disadvantaged.
Kate Van Barneveld (Counsellor)

Kate has worked with SCW for 8 years. She has been happily married to Nico for 38 years and has three adult children. Her initial counselling training was with Anglicare. She has studied Psychodrama (using drama to counsel) and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Counselling. She is a generalist counsellor but specialises in the area of sexual addiction. She is also the co-ordinator of the Sutherland Shire Support After Suicide Support Group.
Andrew D. James (Counsellor)

Andrew orginally joined SCW at the beginning of 2007 as an intern counsellor whilst still completing his studies. With a passion to see lives made whole he initially completed a Diploma of Ministry at Hillsong International Leadership College and later decided to further his studies by undertaking a Bachelor of Counselling at Tabor College Sydney. In addition to his internship, Andrew has played an active role in the Rock and Water Program since the end of 2006. Although a generalist counsellor, he has found himself enjoying his work with young people and their families and looks forward to extending this into other areas. Recently married, Andrew hopes to develop a series of programs in the future that will assist people in the area of their relationships.
