Family Counselling for children and young people

Family Counselling for children and young people

Our clinical team takes a family perspective in relation to the many challenges facing children today. Parents are seen in relation to their expressed concerns about their child’s emotional, social and behavioural development. Children are also seen to assist with their skills development across a range of tasks of personal and interpersonal growth such as learning to regulate emotions, coping skills in the face of family stress, academic stress and peer pressure. Common reasons parents seek psychological assistance for their child/children include adjustment to family separation, anxiety, stress, disobedience and conduct problems.

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive Assessments

Southern Community Welfare is pleased to be able to offer a range of cognitive assessment tests assessing both learning potential and acquired skill for children and young people aged between 4 and 16 years.

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessments, also known as “IQ” assessments, are designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of an individual’s intellectual ability. These assessments are used to identify one’s potential in learning and are usually administered to assist with the following:

  • Identifying whether a child may be 'intellectually gifted"

  • Identifying the presence of any weakness or strengths in learning

  • Providing information for children presenting with behavioural difficulties

  • Determining the level/severity of children with possible developmental issues (e.g., Intellectual disability, Autism spectrum disorders)

  • Assessing eligibility for educational services and/or formulating specific educational support plans

SCW has for a limited time only the Stanford-Binet IQ assessment. SCW also has the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Fourth Edition (WISC-IV).

Academic Achievment

Tests of academic achievement are designed to assess an individual's aptitude for Reading, Mathematics, Writing and Oral Language. These assessments can provide a rich source of information about an individual’s acquired academic skills relative to their peers, and are usually administered when there is evidence of a number of difficulties such as:

Poor academic results, particularly in a specific domain

Behavioural difficulties (e.g. restlessness, poor listening, aggressive behaviour)

• Poor attention and concentration when attempting school work

Disengagement in tasks, or poor performance but high ability
